Baseball, TV, and Politics

Did you see the pre-game for the World Series Game 4? If ever there was hope that the Democrats could pull off a minor miracle and save the House, it is lost. This little shindig could actually cost them the Senate.

Bush Sr. and Dubya are circling the field in Arlington, TX, in a golf cart flying mini-American flags. Sr. is in a vivid red windbreaker, Dubya in vivid blue. White-haired Barbara is shown behind home plate, taking pictures- for the family album, no doubt. The boys are waving to the roaring, increasingly worshipful, crowd.

Bush Sr. is helped out of the cart, obviously feeble, but willing. He is smiling. He is using a cane. Dubya moves to help support him. The crowd roars louder.

(Dubya is part of the history of baseball in TX. With poppa’s financial support, he bought into a major league team, the Texas Rangers, and was named Managing General Partner. They convinced the city to build a new stadium in Arlington at taxpayer expense. As in Atlanta, public housing was destroyed to make way. Not long after, the team was sold at a substantial profit. It was the only time that Dubya came out ahead in business. It was the last job he had before becoming Governor of Texas. He is a certified baseball hero in Texas, in addition to everything else Texans think about him.)

Cut to perfect camera angle- not from the mound, actually- and Dubya, well-coached, throws a strike to the catcher. The Texas crowd, already in a spirit-induced frenzy, roars. With Dubya’s help, Sr. is helped back into the cart.

Later, they are shown in the crowd: Dubya, standing, clapping; white-haired Momma lookin' matronly- it’s a great Republican Family Moment.

At the seventh inning stretch, following a hymn-like rendition of "God Bless America" Sr. and Dubya are shown back in the golf cart, back in their vivid red and blue, in a cued salute before the cameras.

Does this scenario pass the sniff test? This is all happening on Fox TV, you know.
